Editorial Comment by Henry Reed
We are certainly fortunate to have an
experienced authority such as Beverly Jaegers to outline for us the path
of innovation in the field that has been called
"parapsychology." That term is becoming outmoded as the times
are changing.
Nothing has caused as much activity and
enthusiasm about psychic abilities and intuition as remote viewing. It
is bringing people together as never before to explore the implications
of this "new look" at an old phenomenon.
Beverly Jaegers is correct, in my view, about how the older
"mystical" term of clairvoyance received a needed modern new
vision of itself and found it in the term, "remote viewing."
The term has a technological, scientific ring to it. At the same time,
the use of the term "viewing" has its own built-in
interpretation of what is happening. This connotation may prove to be
indicative of the nature of the process or may prove to be a biased
understanding, using a metaphor from the senses to explain something
that has little to do with sensory functioning. In a like way,
"Extra-sensory perception" has the connotation that it is an
extension of the senses.
For the most part, however, people seem to less interested in the
underlying mechanism than in the prospect that they can use this skill
to some advantage. It is the applied nature of the ability that most
excites the imagination. Remote viewing came to the public attention in
the context of spying. That particular use may also excite concerns
about the potential for privacy violations from the unethical use of the
ability. What Beverly Jaegers points out, however, in attributing the
advent of remote viewing to Ingo Swann, that the origin of remote
viewing has deeper roots in the exploration of the unknown, as in
scientific intuition, for it was used for space exploration before it
was used for spying.
The International
Remote Viewing Association is one of the developments brought about
by the excitement over remote viewing. It reflects the essentially
collaborative nature of the activity. Clearly, the new clothes that
intuition has received in the form of remote viewing is leading to many
new, vital discussions and explorations. We can look forward to much in
the future. For an idea about using remote viewing to see into the
future of this method of applied intuition, be sure to read our
interview with Beverly Jaegers.
