Commentaries on
Kelly Karate Encounters the Moon Princess
Initial Comments by Editor:
Stories for children that demonstrate the use of intuition would be a very important
resource. Do you know of any other such books? Let us know!
Author's response
The
essay by VerDella Denwiddie on my book, Kelly
Karate Encounters
the Moon Princess, captivates
the essence of the novel in a very clear and
compelling manner.
My goal writing the story was to convey to children that
they have
everything they need inside of them to get through life's journey. By showing
how the main character , Kelly, uses her intuition, I felt a child could
learn how to develop his or her own intuition as well.
In VerDella's essay she says, "Developing intuition means
expanding
one's awareness, honoring intuitive experiences and seeking support from the
universal sources." This is what Kelly Karate is all about.
How does one teach a child to develop intuition? In this time,
children live in a warp speed existence. They are bombarded with information
when what they crave is wisdom. How does one compete with video games, the
internet, multiple TV channels, and violent action packed movies?
My Grandfather used to say, "In order to be understood, speak to
another in their language." The language of the child is primal,
unsophisticated, and open. Children think in bright, vivid, rapidly moving
thoughts and pictures. Children are drawn to tales of good against evil. They
are naturally intuitive but most seem to lose this gift upon entering
adolescence. The way to teach a child anything is to do so with out them
realizing they're being taught. Storytelling is the best way.
In Henry Reed's book, Edgar Cayce on Channeling Your Higher Self, Dr.
Reed tells us to remember Edgar Cayce's major principles, some of which are:
"Intuition arises from our sympathetic attunement with the object of our
intuition. Empathy is a form of attunement. Love is the highest form of
attunement. Intuitive knowledge comes from within. Genuine intuitions are
consistent with our highest values or ideals."
The main character in the book, Kelly, becomes more intuitive by her
sympathetic attunement with the object of her intuition which in the
beginning of the story is her Grandfather then the object of her intuition
evolves to God. Kelly is empathetic to the other character's plight against
the evil dragon which allows her to rely more upon her intuition that
supplies her with the knowledge of how to rid Diamond World of the dragon.
Kelly comes to realize that love is the highest form of attunement and
opens her heart to her father and family. With the guidance from the ancient
monk in Diamond World, Kelly learns by application that intuitive knowledge
comes from within. And finally, we see Kelly's genuine intuitions are
consistent with her highest values and ideals. We see her use her intuition
more and more easily with every hurdle she jumps over in the novel.
The process of writing the book was at first difficult for me. I know
now, I was "thinking" too much, I wasn't using my intuition.
The book took eight years to complete. I would start then stop. I gave
myself writer's block which I did out of self-defense because I needed to
pause for awhile. I wrote the book and sent it off to a well known publisher
who wrote back that he loved it but I needed to re-write it with a different
point of view. More frustration developed. I attended a creative writing
class where I was blessed with the best writing teacher I've ever had, Teresa
Miller. Ms. Miller boosted my self esteem by letting me know I was on the
right track, I just needed to rewrite it again! While rewriting Kelly
Karate, I wrote another children's book about a kid who dies in an accident
and whose spirit is unable to make the transition. As I read over this book,
I became aware that my inner voice was trying to tell me something. There was
something missing in Kelly Karate I wasn't sure what but I knew it tied into
the other book. I was onto something, my intuition almost seemed to be
shouting to me that I was on target.
As I began to write one day, I laid down for a few minutes and fell
instantly into a deep dream state. In the dream., I saw Kelly fighting along
with another girl against an evil dragon that threatened to destroy the
girl's world. When I woke up, I knew what the novel needed. It needed to have
another parallel world where a battle was taking place, it also needed to
address the idea that death isn't final. I sat down and rewrote the book in
about a week. I write to music and I will chose two songs and play them over
and over, it keeps my mind in a certain rote pattern. I listen to the music,
and am transported to the world of the novel, I feel what the character's
feel, I see the action, and then I hear the sounds of the dialogue, and other
atmospheric conditions. I have to write early and sometimes get up at 2:30,
or 3:00 am to write if I'm into a scene.
I could teach anyone to write with this process. It only takes a
little determination.
What I like best about the book is the way the main character evolves
from being egocentric to ethnocentric, which for some can be an endless
journey. Kelly realizes her purpose in life is to battle evil by utilizing her
intuition.
Thank-you.
Susan :)
