Contemplating the infinity symbol, I'm immediately taken back to high school math class, working with my pencil to make the various mathematical symbols we worked with. I enjoyed the calligraphy of math as much as its beautiful concepts. It is interesting now to consider that perhaps part of my fascination with the infinity symbol has to do with its inherent, esoteric meaning and power. Maybe I was being drawn to draw it because of the impact doing so had upon me. I'm learning about the many facets of the "Lemniscate," as the infinity symbol is more generally known. It has a place in the geometry of shapes, as well as the magic of invisible energies.

The Power of the Infinity Symbol is a fun little book. It is a special edition, or type of book, that focuses as much on the aesthetics of the page as the contents of the words. As an imprint of Inner Traditions / Bear Books Publishers, "Earthdancer" is one of the series originally with Findhorn Press. The emphasis is upon healing. In the case of the Infinity Symbol, the author focuses on the theme of balance and integration, the marriage of the opposites. Mythology and symbolism is integrated with suggestions for exercises to provide the reader with a personal experience of the concept. Since many of these concepts have to do with energy, energies and moving energies, it is appropriate that the processes suggested are physical, such as dancing the symbol with your arms, moving them in the figure 8 pattern while envisioning healing and integration.

The author explores both the "infinity" implication and the numerology of the number 8. Whether laying on its side as an infinity symbol, or standing upright as the number 8, the "lemniscate" has symbolic implications which include physical ramifications. Although most of the applications have to do with healing, there was one having to do with manifestation (which could include healing). Explicit instructions are provided for creating a three-dimensional, physical lemniscate from cardboard, then decorating it with ideals and wishes to come true. The book contains many photographs, but none pertaining to this most interesting idea. Maybe it will be included in the next edition.
