Raising Lucy:

The True Story of Raising an Orphaned Wild Goose*

Written and Illustrated by

Carol Muzik, Atlantic University

What would you do if an orphaned day old Canada gosling appeared on your doorstep? That was the dilemma for Carol Muzik and her husband Nick as they set out to try and find the little gosling its real family and home. When weeks turned into a month they realized the little goose they named Lucy had become a part of their family. They even taught her to fly! Raising Lucy is based on the true story of raising an orphaned Canada goose to its successful return to the wild.

They raised an orphaned Canada gosling to its successful return to the wild. They didn't set out to keep it, but one day led to the next, and they still had a goose. They didn't set out to raise a goose. In fact, at first they tried every day to find wild geese or a rehabilitator to help them. But when they could not find assistance, they took it upon themselves to care for Lucy. The Muziks' story is true, and fortunately has a happy ending. Because of the problems they had finding help, Carol is committed to educating children and adults on when and how to help any wild animal, if this should ever happen to them.

Their story and Raising Lucy Studios are named for the goose they called 'Lucy' and the commitment it took to raise her. Without the Muziks' efforts, Lucy would not have made it. Though controversial in itself, the Muziks believed there was no other choice than to keep her and help the little orphan survive. They wanted to give the bird a chance--fortunately, and sometimes in spite of the Muziks, their true intention came with a happy ending. Raising the little wild orphan inspired Raising Lucy Studios owner, Carol, to draw and paint pictures of geese for Lucy--to help her to know that she was a goose. Carol's photographs of Lucy became further inspiration to open an art gallery where her framed prints and paintings could be sold, and where Carol ultimately shared her story to a chorus of appreciative Lucy fans that told her, "You have to write a book!"

Carol eventually sold her gallery and focused on Raising Lucy Studios -- producing a short film Raising Lucy--A True Story (on DVD) (2007), and writing and illustrating the Raising Lucy Coloring Storybook and Video, in 2008, and her new children's illustrated storybook, Raising Lucy--The True Story of Raising an Orphaned Wild Goose, released in September 2009. The short film won The Audience Award at the Awaken! Spiritual Film Festival in 2008 and her new children's illustrated storybook is a 2009 'Best Books' Award-Winning Finalist! given by USA Book News.
